How volcanoes plays

Volcano mode drops you somewhere on or near one of the planet's 1,200+ Holocene-active volcanoes. The clue surface is rich โ€” caldera shape, lava-flow texture, ash-darkened slopes, the absence or presence of vegetation, the specific way an island volcano differs from an arc volcano โ€” but the locations themselves can be remote, which makes country-level placement the harder part of the round.

The volcano pool comes from the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program's Holocene catalog. You will see the obvious giants โ€” Etna, Fuji, Kilauea, Cotopaxi โ€” but also Indonesian arc volcanoes, Aleutian peaks, Andean cones, and the long ridge of the East African Rift. Half the skill in this mode is learning which volcanic provinces look distinctively different from each other.

What you'll learn

  • Distinguishing caldera, stratovolcano, and shield-volcano signatures from above
  • Reading recent eruption signs (dark ash, fresh lava, vegetation kill zones)
  • Placing volcanic islands by the surrounding ocean colour and reef structure
  • Recognising tectonic provinces โ€” Ring of Fire vs. Rift Valley vs. hotspot chains
