Mountains get the attention, but some of the most dramatic terrain on Earth is flat. A plateau is an elevated area of comparatively level land that rises sharply above the surrounding country on at least one side. Geographers sometimes call them tablelands, and the name fits: a plateau is essentially a giant tabletop lifted high above the floor around it.
Plateaus cover a surprising share of the planet and play an enormous role in climate, rivers, and where people can live. Understanding how they form makes a lot of the world map suddenly make sense.
What Counts as a Plateau
Two features define a plateau: height and a flat or gently rolling top. What separates it from a plain is the abrupt rise — a plateau stands well above the land beside it, often ending in steep cliffs or escarpments. What separates it from a mountain is that flat summit; instead of rising to a peak, a plateau levels off into broad upland.
Scale things down and you get a mesa, a small flat-topped hill with steep sides, and smaller still a butte. Those classic landmarks of the American Southwest are really just plateaus that erosion has carved into isolated fragments.
The Three Main Ways Plateaus Form
Plateaus are built by different processes, and most fall into one of three families.
- Tectonic uplift — entire blocks of crust are pushed upward by colliding or thickening plates. The Tibetan Plateau rose this way as India crashed into Asia.
- Volcanic stacking — repeated lava flows pile up layer on layer until a broad, level highland forms. The Deccan Plateau of India and the Columbia Plateau of the United States are made of these flood basalts.
- Erosion and dissection — a high surface is gradually cut into by rivers, leaving flat-topped remnants standing above the new valleys. Much of the Colorado Plateau looks this way today.
The World’s Great Plateaus
A few plateaus are so vast they steer the weather and define whole regions.
- The Tibetan Plateau, the highest and largest on Earth, averages over 4,500 metres and is nicknamed the Roof of the World. It feeds Asia’s greatest rivers.
- The Colorado Plateau in the American Southwest, into which the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon.
- The Altiplano of the central Andes, a high basin shared by Bolivia and Peru and home to Lake Titicaca.
- The Ethiopian Highlands, the largest continuous area of high ground in Africa.
- The Deccan Plateau, the broad volcanic heartland of southern India.
Why Plateaus Shape Life
Because they stand so high, plateaus act as the water towers of continents. The snow and ice that collect on the Tibetan Plateau feed the Yangtze, Yellow, Mekong, Ganges, and Indus rivers, supplying water to billions of people downstream. High plateaus also create their own climates: thin air, big temperature swings, and rain shadows that can leave one side lush and the other parched.
For people, flat high ground can be both a gift and a challenge — fertile and defensible in places like the Ethiopian Highlands, but thin-aired and harsh on the Altiplano. Either way, plateaus decide where farms, cities, and trade routes can take root.
Just How Big Can a Plateau Get?
The scale of the largest plateaus is hard to grasp. The Tibetan Plateau spreads across roughly 2.5 million square kilometres, an area larger than many countries, all of it sitting at altitudes most mountaineers train for years to reach. Plateaus this size are not just landforms; they are climate machines, big enough to deflect the jet stream and help drive the Asian monsoon.
Geographers also distinguish where a plateau sits. An intermontane plateau is trapped between mountain ranges, like the Tibetan Plateau pinned between the Himalayas and other ranges, or the Altiplano cradled by two arms of the Andes. A continental or piedmont plateau, by contrast, rises at the edge of mountains or coasts. The setting shapes the climate, the rivers, and the kind of life the highland can support.
Spotting a Plateau From Above
On a satellite image, a plateau reveals itself through edges. Look for a broad, even-toned upland that ends in a sharp line where cliffs drop away to lower terrain, often frayed by canyons biting into the rim. The flat top combined with steep, scalloped margins is the giveaway.
