Themed mode
Deserts
Spawn somewhere inside a major desert.
How deserts plays
Desert mode drops you inside one of the world's major deserts — Sahara, Arabian, Gobi, Atacama, Australian Outback, Kalahari, Mojave, Patagonian, and dozens of smaller ones. This is the highest-difficulty pool in the game for placement, because deserts often look featurelessly similar from above, but the highest-reward pool for cue-reading skill.
Once you learn the texture, dune orientation, oasis pattern, and characteristic colour of each major desert, placement becomes second nature. The Sahara is not one desert — it is dozens, and the Algerian erg looks nothing like the Egyptian Western Desert. The skill ceiling here is essentially unlimited.
What you'll learn
- Reading dune type (linear, star, barchan, transverse) as a wind-regime clue
- Distinguishing sand desert, gravel desert, and rocky desert (hamada, reg, erg)
- Recognising oasis patterns and pivot irrigation as regional fingerprints
- Using soil and rock colour to place yourself by latitude band
